I've just realised that it was exactly 50 years ago on xmas day that I got my first microscope. I'd been begging for one for at least a year before, so it became one of those "never forget" moments for me.
I even remember the first thing I looked at; mould scraped off a rotten pear in the garden. I squashed it between two slides too (didn't get coverslips) so it's pretty amazing I saw anything at all. A drop of water from a stagnant puddle was next and right there, at that very moment was when I became hooked for life on all things micro and (eventually) macro related!!!
Funny old world...
