"Mitty style" Russian objective o_0

Post by Macrero »

Hi,

hope you are all well in these tough times we are living...

So, this thing was listed as eyepiece, but it was obvious that it is an objective. Seemed interesting enough, so I bought it.

The seller could not provide any info about manufacturer or specs. He said that he bought the "eyepiece" from a person who disassembled "medical microscopes".

Size is similar to a Mitty objective, but it is quite heavier. Standard RMS thread. The rear element is unusually big for a 40X objective. 40X/0.5 engraved on the barrel. Nothing else. Working distance is 10mm.

Did a few quick tests. With 150mm tube lens I get about 20X on sensor :? Resolution is not bad and correction is near APO, better than my Olys Fluor. But there is a lot of haze. I think it is caused by the brillant/reflective periphery of element(s) in the rear group. Will try to get them painted when everything returns to normal, I hope it will be soon...

As finite, there is less haze, but more CAs and coverage is worse.

Here it is. Sorry for the low quality pics:

Does anyone have any info about this animal?

Yep, interesting and puzzling :?

I am unable to find any info about this one. It is hard to find anything without knowing at least the manufacturer... I don't know any expert in russian objectives, assuming that it is a russian objective... Seller was pretty positive that it has been made in the USSR. It seems a relatively "modern" design though. Rear group is a doublet + air-spaced 3th element, which suggests that it may be an APO design, or at least Fluor.

A couple of pics more:

Front and rear elements are beautifully coated and it looks and feels like a quality optics. The huge rear element is intriguing.

Edit: 100% crop of a single frame. With 80mm tube lens at around 15X on sensor (!). I put an "aperture ring" which seems to reduce haze, though contrast is still low. Levels/Curves adjusted and sharpened in PS. Not super-apo, but color correction is certainly impressive.

2nd edit: The sample crop is actually without a tube lens. With tube lens there are even less CAs.

This is the one with 80mm tube lens. 100% crop:
