I recognise the BHMJ focus blocks, but the rest of the unit has me puzzled.

Hi Craig,

A quick search shows that this comes from a FTIR microscope.

http://www.labx.com/v2/spiderdealer2/vi ... id=8621454

FTIR is an analytical techinique using fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy. In the case of this type of instrument, the microscope optics allow the analyst to exactly identify the area on the sample being analysed.

See this Wiki entry for more on FTIR

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourier_tr ... ectroscopy

I have used FTIR spectroscopes in the lab but have not used one with a microscope.

Pierre,

Looks like another source for BHMJ focus blocks 8)

Alex,

Thankyou for the information and link. I can now see how everything fits together :)

The BHMJ focus block, on the right, has the stage attached; but what is the role of the second BHMJ? :?

I think the second focus block may be to align the FTIR so that the spectra from this lines up with the optical image.

An example of an FTIR microscope application is shown here:

The top right picture on page 2 shows an FTIR spectrum taken from the spot marked by the cross in the lower image.

Although at $9000, I am not sure this is the cheapest way to get two focus blocks.

Well, some sucker bought it, and will soon have a 60-pound boat anchor landing on his doorstep. Here's hoping I don't throw my back out carrying it to the basement. ;)

Couldn't resist, as several parts of the assemblage look like nifty project fodder. I won't, of course, try to reassemble it into an FTIR microscope.
