Endoscopes, until now, seem to have offered, at best, moderate optical performance. However,

A minor point of clarification... The study as reported did not address optical performance as you might see looking into the eyepiece of an old-fashioned relay lens endoscope. It was comparing standard resolution video (probably about 640x480), with high definition video (probably 1280×720 or 1920×1080). I would expect these details to be buried in the full text of the article, but I could not find an accessible copy online.

The (pCLE probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy) system is a fiber-optic probe 2 millimeters in diameter that can be passed through a normal endoscope and can see structures as small as 1 micron, such as single cells or the nucleus within a cell. "This is essentially a miniaturized microscope that can be placed inside the body, so the tissue doesn't need to be removed and placed under a traditional microscope," Dr. Wallace says.

I ran across this gallery the other day:

There are links to two suppliers, the one I checked had prices like $3,000 to $9,000, yikes.
