I'm just starting out, so don't laugh too hard. I want to try staining, but don't have any. Or so I thought. I read that fish ick medicine contains malachite green, a stain.
Soooooooo, I went to my fish tank and took a bottle out of my fish kit. I cut some apple on my microtome, placed the sections in a dish with the ick medicine and left it for an hour.
Took a section and rinsed it a few time, popped it on a slide with a coverslip. When I looked in the scope, it had dyed the cell walls to a point of high visibilty. Compared to a plain apple section, it was 200% improvement.
This staining stuff really works. Now to get some real stains.

Thanks Dave. I use latex gloves, even when I use it in the tanks.
