In enlarging photography, sometimes a smooth sharpening process with maximum resolution in the focal plane is desired.
For example, if aperture 2.8 is the highest resolving aperture, the depth of field is very shallow,
with aperture 22 the depth of field is large, but the resolution in the plane of focus is poor.
One way to achieve maximum resolution in the focal plane and still maintain a smooth focus is aperture stacking.

Here I used the Laowa 25mm F 2.8, 2.5-5X Ultra Macro, with an image scale of 4.5:1. Camera: Nikon D810
The beetle is a large tropical weevil (Eupholus magnificus).
Image series, aperture and flash steps:
F-stop 2.8, flash power 1/128
F-stop 3.2, flash power 1/107
F-stop 3.6, flash power 1/85
F-stop 4.0, flash power 1/64
F-stop 4.5, flash power 1/53
F-stop 5.0, flash power 1/43
F-stop 5.6, flash power 1/32
F-stop 6.3, flash power 1/27
F-stop 7.1, flash power 1/21
F-stop 8.0, flash power 1/16
F-stop 11.0, flash power 1/8
F-stop 16.0, flash power ¼
This series of 12 images was stacked with Zerene Stacker.
That's it.
Image with f-stop 2.8, maximum resolution, low depth of field.
Image with f-stop 22, low resolution, high depth of field.
Aperture stacking can be combined with focus stacking as required.

Re: Apertur-Stacking
Here with this beetle you could extend the highest resolution range of the eye a bit with a focus stack at f-stop 2.8,
then the area around the eye would be sharper.

Re: Apertur-Stacking
Thanks for explaining how DOF stacking and Focus stacking can be combined.
I note that you have varied the flash output between aperture settings so that light exposure remains as constant as possible.
I assume that these are manual flash settings.
Do you think that the Aperture Priority could also be used thus auto changing shutter speed and ISO to maintain constant exposure in a setting?

Re: Apertur-Stacking
Hello John
It can also be done with automatic exposure, both by changing the exposure time and by changing the sensitivity (ISO).
Actually it is very simple and clean.
