Re: Egg Papilio machaon update I & update II
Working out well! Odds are it will be parasitized, but fingers crossed.
Your use of a plamp attached directly to the tripod is giving me an idea to try a modification of what I do, which right now is with a plamp attached to a separate pole. I can move the camera around it but its a bit fussy as it is now. Mount the pole. Attach the plamp, and then attach the plant to the plamp...

Connecting to tripod has also limitations. Once set you can not move it whitout disconectig the plant.

Re: Egg Papilio machaon update I & update II
This looks like healthy feeding of a probably 2nd instar larva. ("2nd instar" is between first and second molts.)
The earlier video, at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWpVsyitBak , looked like defensive behavior of a caterpillar in its resting state while getting ready to molt.
If you want to protect this caterpillar from parasitoids, while still leaving it in place, you might tie a fine mesh bag over the whole plant or at least the part the caterpillar is on.
The bag technique worked well for me when I raised the North American subspecies, Papilio machaon oregonius. Of course that was a long time ago, summer of 1968 I believe, back when oregonius was considered a full species. Different food plant -- oregonius feeds on wild tarragon, Artemisia dracunculus. To this day I find it hard to walk by a tarragon plant without checking it for larvae.

I have several of this type of laundry basket with a finer weave, great for enclosing living plants + caterpillars; perhaps you could get one locally.

That should block most parasitoids, but you will want to have it fit snugly on the stem. There are tiny wasps that can get thru though.

Day 11
Stacks, 20 pictures, Focus bracket, Software affinity foto. Think I need other software for more complex subjects.
