Post Focus Stacks with Lumix Gx80

Post by Guido »

The lens used is the olympus 60 macro
I use the lumix normally for video but decided to test the Post Focus stacking.

The stacking was done in camera.

Bot images free handed; The butterfly is a dead specimen but the fly was alive ;)

Thanks for that. I really like post focus in my Panasonic.

There is also a general post focus thread here: http://www.photomacrography.net/forum/v ... 25&t=37904

Digging in the manual I found that in this camera there are 2 ways to focus stack.

1. Post focus stack. delivers a 4k video from the stacked images. This 4K video can be stack in the camera (automatic or chosen range). The video can also processed in software on your computer.

2. Focus bracketing. You can determine the amount of pictures and the step size. This delivers jpg's or raw images in the full format 16 Mpxls

Guido, there is an important difference between them. Postfocus gives you less control than bracketing. Sometimes postfocus leaves some foreground out of focus whereas you can precisely pick the zones of focus. At least, that was my experience.

That is correct, bracketing gives also the full sensor format and raw.

Yes, for all these reasons I do not use postfocus for still subjects. It can be useful for live subjects. But focus bracketing is extremely fast until the buffer fills, so this can be better even for live subjects if the stack is not deep.

Depending on the camera model, some Panasonic cameras give you an option of 4K or 6K video for post focus.

Good stuff. I thought I had researched the heck out of the Panasonic versus Olympus m 4/3 bodies for these these features. Somehow the point that Panasonic also does regular focus bracketing did not make itself known to me. I thought it was all about recording in video.

No built in focus bracketing on the G7.
