Blepharisma the pink ciliated (video)

Post by carlos.uruguay »

This beautiful pink ciliated is a skilled hunter.
Its color is due to the blepharismin pigment, which is a photo receptor
If blepharismin pignemto has an antibiotic effect on certain strains of Staphylococcus aureus
20X and 40X lenses
Dark field and oblique polarized light
Panasonic GH4 camera

Another unique clip,thanks for sharing!
I read " it has many vacuoles because it's dying". Do you know why is that?

Regards,

Walter

Hi Walter.
Thanks for looking and cementing
I observed this phenomenon live.
When the ciliates are about to die (and many amoebas too)
Vacuoles increase in size and quantity
An example:
"As many ciliated protozoa near death, their large contractile vacuoles, which serve as little pumps, are unable to control the proper amount of water within the organisms and they frequently swell to enormous sizes, as this dying Blepharisma is doing. Healthy specimens can be seen swimming past this bloated one. The rose-colored pigment in its body has begun to coagulate. Recorded under Nomarski DIC illumination with a horizontal field of view of approximately 1,600 microns. "
