Due to absence of snails in this time of the year, we switched over to periwinkles. As a periwinkle is a bit similar to a land snail, the idea was to have a look at the tongue or "radula".
Removing it from its shell, the tongue can already be seen with the bare eye and is up to 4 cm long (about 1.5 inch). Not sure why it is that long and also wondering whether it is made of chitin (like the snail radula) or something else.
For this set I mounted 2 tongues in euparal, the one with the red teeth was stained. They were observed with polarized light with almost crossed polars.
All were taken with a 4x objective, which is already showing most of the interesting details. I stacked picture 1 and 5, the otheres are single shots.
All and all it looks very different compared to the radula I had a look at in my previous post.
