We've done this with a Sulfuric & Nitric heated acid fogs, very caustic. This was checking for counterfeit chips, and in a proper lab, with proper protection. I would also like to do this at home now I'm retired, but also reluctant.I'd love to decapsulate ICs for photography, but having no background at all in chemistry makes me reluctant. I can't even read that box of elements thing (periodic table). I shouldn't be handling corrosive acids.
I think Olympusman (Michael) does this for the nice chip images he shows.
