... unless I'm missing the point. I'd use ImageJ. It's free and has numerous microscopy plugins. In the first image below I was measuring the angle of a scalpel section so I could make a jig to resharpen them.

Interesting idea, but probably a bit overkill for my needs. Thanks for the suggestion.
