Long legged fly

Post by obturate »

These critters have fast reflexes. I would get the picture framed, push the shutter button, review the image and there would be no fly. I thought they were being spooked by the ettl pre-flash. Even in manual mode they were somehow jumping the shutter. Ended up putting the flash on the lowest output and had about a 30% success rate capturing them in frame.

Looks good!

Yes, these flies are easily spooked by ettl pre-flash. There have been suggestions also that they can be spooked by either the noise or visual cue of an auto diaphragm stopping down.

That is exceptional! I don't even bother trying to photograph these little jewels, since I get so many empty leaves.

Dolichopodidae (long legged flies) are quick, but in a manual flash mode I can usually catch them. In an auto mode they are often spooked.

This is a female Condylostylus caudatus type. And your image is excellent.
