smartphone screen film

Post by nanometer »

We were taking apart a non-working galaxy phone. There was a shiny metallic film under (and in contact with) the glass screen which we separated from the glass. We knew there was a pattern there from the diffraction off the surface, but I'm perplexed by what we see. I expected to only see a simple grid of pixels.

Mitty 20x, 2um steps, ring light on top of diffuser dome, sony A99, Minolta 80-200 tube lens at 200mm. Stacked with Zerene pmax. The larger square features are about 20um wide.

I have not seen this before. It's a very interesting structure.

You say "pixels", but from the location and size of the grid, I'm thinking this is part of the touch-sensing system.

Are you talking about something like what's shown HERE?

Rik,

I don't think that is it. Here's a pic of the metallic layer folded back away from the screen, so it's the shiny side that was against the glass. It got cracked as we separated it from the window probably because we didn't know what we were doing. Anyway the above image is of this metallic layer.

AMOLED layer? There are lots of videos on Youtube how to disassemble these pups.

That would make sense. Samsung says that Super AMOLED also integrates the touchscreen function.

Thanks James and Rik. That image you have there James is very convincing. Using that, we can conjecture that what is left on my image is for capacitance sensing--which look to be the blue blobs that appear to have some circuitry inside of them. Big squares red, little squares blue, circles green.
