Handheld stacking in Helicon software?

Post by Bcald7 »

I like using Helicon software. I can't get good results with handheld stacks. Especially when the frames are misaligned quite a bit. Photoshop auto-align works pretty great but I can't figure out how to align them in PS and send the aligned layers to Helicon.

Is there a way to get Helicon to align as well as PS?

Thanks

OK, sorry. I didn’t realize nobody here used Helicon software.

No reason to be sorry, lots of people use Helicon here, including me. I was just letting you know they have a forum. I don't know the answer to your question and thought the link might help. I've never done any hand held stacking.

Cheers ...

Regardless of the stacking software that you are using - you are likely to get unpredictable results without a tripod or some other stabilization platform. Reliable stacking requires axial stability more than lateral stability - so if your images are shifting right/left/up/down then they are likely shifting unpredictably in the focus dimension as well.

But - to answer your PS question about Layers:

If you use Auto-align in PS to align laterally, you can export these images to individual files using File->Export->Layers to Files. Then you can import these files to Helicon to stack.

FYI, I have Don Komarechka snowflake book (AKA = donkom here) and he only does hand held macro shooting. His snowflake images are very impressive.

... also IF you use Photoshop, got to Youtube and look up auto align layers. There might be others besides this one.
