A friend has given me a small bag of river sand of a suspicious reddish color. Once examined in the microscope and separated some grains, we have some pretty almandine garnets.

Maybe the 70% of the sand are garnets. But I have separated a few good crystals. There were many fragments there.Lou Jost wrote:Wow! What a surprise! Was this regular river sand with a few rare crystals that you separated, or was it mostly crystals? I never knew that river sand could have such nice unweathered crystals.
