Filter Thread Size for Rodenstock Enlarger lens.

Post by georgedingwall »

Hi there,

This is probably a question for Rik or Charlie.

I've picked up a Rodestock Rodagon 50mm F4 enlarger lens cheap on ebay.

I'm trying to find out the front filter thread size so that I can get an adaptor for it.

The diameter to the inside of the thread is about 35mm, so I'm guessing the filter thread should be a little larger than that.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I've tried that place, but there does not appear to be any information on thread sizes.

I think it will probably be 37 mm as the internal diameter is about 36mm. Checking on suppliers of stepping rings, 37 mm seems to be the closest to the size of lens I have, although there seems to be a few listed at 37.5 mm. I'm not sure how much of a difference half a millimetre would make, but I thought I'd ask here in case anyone knows the exact size before I send off an order.

Bye for now.

George,

Sorry, I don't know this one. Maybe Charlie can help.

In general, half a millimeter would matter quite a lot -- that's roughly equal to the total thread depth on one side of the filter.

Given your 36mm measurement of inside diameter, and the fact that it's a common size, nominal 37mm sounds pretty likely.

Just browsed the web and found this:-

"I almost forgot: Yes, the 39mm screw mount is *the* standard mount used in virtually any present enlarger (maybe except LF). All current enlarging lenses for 35mm and medium format come in M39x1, and so do the EL-Nikkors. And the Schneiders and Rodenstocks and Meoptas and ... "

All the best as usual,

Found the link to this on Wikipedia. If you scroll down to your lens on Table 1 below the filter threads are in row 8.

http://www.prograf.ru/rodenstock/enlarg ... tml#table1

Not sure your lens is there though as it may be an old model but the table may indicate the filter thread sizes they use.

Hope that helps?

I had seen a similar list on another site, but as yousay, the lens I have is not listed. It is an older model, and I've not been able to see one like it on any site I've found with tech specs of enlarger lenses.

Thanks.

Whilst browsing I read somewhere that Linos now owns Rodenstock. Here is a page of e-mail addresses for Linos, I suggest you e-mail various departments with your question on the 50mm f4 filter size and see if they know.

Also their Rodenstock lenses

George... don't know this one. As Rik said based on your info 37mm sounds like a fair bet.

Unlike camera lenses, enlarging lenses and "process" lenses do not alway have standard "filter threads" on the front. Some have available sizes, others are threaded with odd sizes. Some are not threaded at all.

Lenses like this will likely finish their lives "reverse mounted" on bellows or tubes. Even if you can't find an exact fit, you can often make up an effective adapter with the help an appropriate ring of some type and some epoxy glue.

Hi all,

Thanks for all the tips.

I've gone ahead and ordered the 37mm ring.
