CPU compnent

My computer repairman gave me some CPUs to try to access. I was able to open them with a heat gun, but could not mind the processor. However, I was able to get some small metal plates out of the package. They were covered with solder, but Nitric Acid dissolved it. One side of the plate is shiny silver and featureless. The other side is gold and appears to have an array of connection points.

They're not metal plates, that is the silicon die you are looking at! In a modern CPU the die has hundreds of solder ball connections down to a small PCB (Which has 6-10 layers of interconnect) and has the package solder balls on one side (And the die on the other). In your image you can see the top layer of metal (Cu) and about 3 others, a modern intel CPU has about 12 layers of metal above the transistors.

Gary, so what you are saying, underneath the silver side there is lurking an actual CPU? If so, I'll have to see what I can do to dissolve it.
