Euglena acus

Post by Charles Krebs »

A great many of these in my latest sample. The first two were in a really "deep" slide, so I concentrated on ones moving up close against the coverslip. Not too obvious in the first darkfield shot, but I really like the out of focus background in the second image.

The last was a "tight shot with the 100X.

I can see why you like the oof background in #2. I like the darkfield. Do you know what the red area is in each one?

Amazing...the last one is a real eye-opener. These guys go by the name Lepocinclis acus, these days.

Excellent pictures again.
Did you tried the Zeiss 40 1.00 planapo (and what one?) with your DIC prisms?

Arturo...

No the mounts are different. But I had a couple of condenser mount dovetails machined to use on my Olympus for this type of "experimentation". I have one attached to the base of the Zeiss oil darkfield condenser. Seems to work just fine.

Pau...

Yes. I have actually posted a fair number of pictures taken with the Zeiss 40/1.0 Plan Apo (oil, with diaphragm) as well as a few with the Zeiss 63/1.40 Plan Apo, both with Olympus DIC. With the 63X Zeiss I use the prism for the Olympus 60/1.40 oil, and with the 40X Zeiss I use the prism for the Olympus 40X (dry) Apo. They work quite nicely but with perhaps a slightly less even background illumination. You can see for yourself in these posts (look at the picture info to see which are the Zeiss images):

Here. #11629 (two 40/1.0 DIC)
Here. #3716 (one 40X DIC)
Here. #13439 (three 63/1.40 DIC)
Here. #18087 (40/1.0 Zeiss with Zeiss darkfield condenser)

I'll often use the Zeiss 40X oil after a slide has already been "oiled" for use with 100X or 60X but I want another shot at a lower magnification and can no longer use the dry 40X because of the oil.

Bruce,
Lepocinclis acus (duly noted... thanks!)

Baley,
The red pigment spot ("stigma") is light sensitive and is often found in organisms that move in response to light levels. (This is called "phototaxis" and be either towards or away from the light).

Charles, thanks for the info and for the opportunity to see again those masterpieces done with this lens.

I'm testing my new Planapo 63/1.4 and it seems to work nicely with my weird DIC system.

The depth in the second one is stunning Charlie, like a boat over a lagoon.
