Giant robber fly with blue wings

Giant robber fly, about 1.5 inch long. Biggest I have ever seen.

Love the blue on the wings.

Hi Kurt,

Great set of images!

I've always heard that "rules" are made to be broken and the first image is a classic example. (i.e., " you never put the subject dead center")
Well...this is an instance where centering the image makes it a powerful image, in my opinion.

Great job!

Wow! A beautiful female Microstylum sp. (not sure which species 'though). Looks like it is very fresh ('teneral') -- hasn't reached full coloration yet. Wonderful photo (as always!).

Thanks, Mark, Eric.

Eric - thanks for the ID and info. Yes..that explained why it was so cooperative and hardly moved at all! Probably just molted. Only flew away (short distance) a couple of times.

Wonderful shots Kurt! The first one especially is a stunner, though I might bump up the contrast a tad to make it pop a bit more.

Thanks Paul. Not really fond of over contrasty and over saturated images.
