Two-part Zeiss articles on "How to Read MTF Curves"

Post by DQE »

I generally have reservations about most published lens MTF curves since they usually aren't documented as to being theoretically calculated vs measured. Also, if measured, were they measured by a specific method or recognized standard? Interpretation is also a challenge since these data for lenses are usually complex curves in tangential (aka radial) and sagittal (aka meridional) directions. And then they are functions of the lens aperture, wavelength, etc. Still, with experience and understanding, the curves should describe image blur due to light spread in the lens in great detail.

Anyway, below are links to a two-part Zeiss article set on "How to Read MTF Curves":

Part 1 is linked first, then Part 2:

(I suspect these documents have been posted and linked previously but I was unable to find previous posts via a simple forum search.)

I was able to download them from a Google search , first two links returned, on "How to read MTF Curves Zeiss".

First link is
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... 0519,d.d2s

Second is
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j& ... 2s&cad=rja

I've never worked out how to get the direct link from the result of a Google search when it's a download :?

Quite a good article, covering Nikon, Canon and Zeiss charts:

The target URL is buried in the middle of the Google query, between "url=" and the next "&", and with all punctuation represented in %hex notation.

Parsed out, these are:
