A book review of interest to amateur microscopists...

Post by twebster »

Hi y'all :!:

Steve Neeley (psneeley) has written a brief book review of interest to our amateur microscopy members. We all know how difficult it can be to identify many microorganisms. The book Steve reviewed, I'm sure, will be a valued reference to all amateur microscopists. And the best part...it is darned inexpensive :!: :D

Read Steve's review HERE.

Thanks a bunch, Steve. :D

Thanks for the info there Steve. I will take the title and the ISBN number over to my local book store and see if they can get me a copy. :D

You might want to try the downloadable PDF first, since it is really just $3.78 (well, based on the exchangae rate a few days ago) and you may find you don't need a printed copy.

This book is AWESOME!!

267 pages plus cover material. Pages 16 through 245 consist entirely of beautiful photographs with informative captions. (Charlie's stuff would fit right in -- a high compliment to both!) This all packs into a 40MB download, and to my eye the photographs have suffered very little if at all from the compression.

The electronic version is of course fully searchable -- a few seconds to find the Chilodonella uncinata picture on page 160.

For $3.79 PayPal transaction, I can't recall ever seeing another deal this good!

I had a bit of trouble finding the download, but it was well worth the search.

Steve, I owe you bigtime for finding this -- thanks!

Edit: Corrected my silly mistake of typing "Peter" instead of "Steve".

Steve... thanks for the tip! Best 4 bucks I've spent having anything to do with microscopy.

Steve, I also owe you an apology for typing the wrong name. I have no idea where "Peter" came from. :?

Try http://www.shaker.eu/en/content/catalog ... 322-2544-5.

I believe that's the latest version of the same book, as PDF. The price has gone up (to 7.37 EUR at this moment), but it's still a great deal.

Thanks Rik, appreciate the link. On first look the books appears to be a winner.

Bought another book recently called "Free-Living Freshwater Protozoa" by D.J.Patterson that is also a wonderful resource. A bit pricey but worth every penny in my mind.

The book you mentioned it fantastic, but it has been freely available on Foissners web site for years along with dozens of other PDF books regarding various ciliates. Foissner was the 2nd author and supervised this project.

http://www.wfoissner.at/publications.htm

He provides them freely and there are at least a dozen which are very useful, I have downloaded all of them. If you are interested in ciliates take a look and they are free.
