1.5×1.0 cm FOV at micron resolution

Post by fleegix »

maybe of interest to people here:

https://elifesciences.org/articles/93633

“Using a custom-made giant lens system with a magnification of ×2 and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.25, and a CMOS camera with more than 100 megapixels, we built a trans-scale scope AMATERAS-2, and realized fluorescence imaging with a transverse spatial resolution of approximately 1.1 µm across an FOV of approximately 1.5×1.0 cm2.”

Interesting stuff!

In general flavor, this reminds me of a scaled version of the Mesolens, which gave 4X at NA 0.47, covering a 6mm x 6 mm FOV. There is some discussion of that at https://www.teledynevisionsolutions.com ... /mesolens/ , referenced by the thread here at PMN viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9637 . Edit: there's a diagram of the Mesolens at http://www.mesolens.com/product/technic ... fications/ . Lots of differences in details of the lens design.

Those are impressive specs! 44mm FN on top of all that, even more than they used.

I have had similar lenses to that, though they are monochrome. Some easily available and inexpensive old photolithography lenses for making microcircuits have FOV > 2cm x 2cm at micron-level resolution with NA= 0.25, with essentially zero distortion.

I had one with NA= 0.36.

That's quite a setup and brings the size into perspective.

That was one of the smaller ones. Some of my newer ones are bigger!

I wonder what corner performance is like on this lens, and how far you could push down a Nikon HR 5x/0.25 with comparable results. I should read the paper, but my impression is that their lens is pretty excellent center to corner.

Well the sensors have a 35mm diagonal which makes me think it's probably similar to (or the same sensor as) the Canon 120MP 29.22mm x 20.2mm (https://canon-cmos-sensors.com/canon-12 ... os-sensor/)

So it's somewhere between fullframe and APSC, I don't think you can push most lenses down that far.
There are some exceptions, though I haven't been able to test them properly - not yet: viewtopic.php?p=302261#p302261

I can push the 5x HR down to 3x on aps-c with minor corner degradation, though I assume already worse than their corner performance. I'll have to think about a yet shorter tube lens just to see how far it can go. Not that I think it could stand in for this objective, just wondering how close I could hypothetically get since I will never get this custom objective.
