Heres what you normally get when using your pop up flash for macro

If you're intending further experimentation with this approach, I'd strongly recommend lining the internal surfaces with reflective matl - eg ali cooking foil.

When messing around with similar, I also tried the matl used for milk / juice cartons (with aluminised inner surface) ... which saved the (minor) hassle of the 'lining' step - but wasn't as effective.

I'd also intended to make one out of tinplate (ex baked bean tin or similar) to gain the extra stiffness / rigidity - for transport etc - but as I started using an external flash + bracket, never bothered.

Whilst I'd (now) miss the versatility offered by external flash, the lo-tech approach has one big advantage - minimum additional weight :)
