Testing: Venus Optics Laowa 65mm f/2.8 Macro Lens

Post by LewTwo »

Finally cobble enough of my 'MacroScope' together to do some preliminary testing of the Venus Optics Laowa 65mm f/2.8 Macro lens.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0847NN341

This is an excellent lens but note the slight barrel distortion.

I did a sequence of 20 pictures using a MicroCalibration slide ($10 on Ebay) and a Russian Stamp in magnification ratios of 2:1, 1:1 and 1:2 (per markings on the lens).
These are two samples from the test sequence (reduced to 1024 width).

(if I got the attributes correct)

This is a BIG file (123 Mbytes). I can not say how long it will be available.

Very interesting. This has been a lens of interest, since I would like to be able to easily go over 1:1. For applications on natural objects, the distortion would not be even noticeable, I expect.

I like it. It is one of three I will keep in my camera bag (well four if you include the world's ugliest camera cap ... 7artisans 18mm Ulatra-thin, https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08LPRC4Z1). The other two are the standard kit lenses.

What I have a rough time doing is carrying more than two lenses on me and one camera body when out in the field. Then there is a 50% chance I have the wrong lens on when I find something. If I bring a 3rd lens, then that goes to ~ 33%...
