Gel with specific refractive index

Post by Phil973 »

Hi, i shoot inclusions in amber and for versatility purpose, i rather install specimens between 2 microscope specimen holders (glass slices) covered with gel in order to "flaten" the field of view, than emerged on a liquid. This mainly to preserve the ability to position the specimen more freely (if the word make sense, English is not my native language).
In the past i'ved tried many kind of gels (echography, lubricantes...) and found a lubricante which gave me pretty satisfactory results.
As i always try to improve my setup, i'm looking for a gel (not too liquid) with a refractive index as close as possible as the amber (+/-1.54)
Thanks in advance

Hi,

Could you give us as a starting point the name and source of the gel that you currently use please?

Thanks

John

The last one i use who doesn't work because on high magnification it shows a kind of granulometric texture and a light blue color was "Ultrasound Gel by Liquasonic". However, the consistency was great as it doesn't spills from the specimen holder "sandwich".
The one i am using for quite a while now is "Gel Lubricante" made by Calox. My supplier don't really trust i use such quantity for photography....LOL
This one is ok, it doesn't display any side effect (or i can't attribute them directly to it...) but it tents to spills from the specimen holders when used with thick amber pieces, he's very ok for thin ones.
Still looking for the Holy Grail...
