Setup suggestions: Mesmerised by Opals - Robert Smith

Post by Craig Gerard »

I watched this short segment on ABC Australia (Vimeo link below).

Looking at the intention of the photographer and considering the setup it became apparent some fine tuning could be accomplished in the regard to the optical setup (I may be wrong).

Would anyone like to offer some suggestions?

Interesting and attractive images, but as you imply, a heroic sized sledge hammer  to crack a fairly simple macrophotography 'nut' Reminds me of the insanely long bellows used by the Victorian photomicrographers to mate their plate cameras with a microscope.

Here is another piece of work from the same photographer.

Does an 'extreme' effective aperture have an upside?

Yes. Where colors are produced by an interference structure, a narrower cone of light will produce more intense colors. For example if you look at a piece of reflection diffraction grating with a high magnification wide aperture lens, you can see the lines but the colors go away completely. I would not be surprised if this effect applies to colors from an agate also.

He's shooting at f/16 with that half a mile tubing system.
I'm afraid to calculate the effective aperture.
