Langdon Beach in Pensacola Florida for diatoms

Post by zzffnn »

We will be going to Pensacola (beach), Florida, USA, in mid August, from Houston Texas.

Does any member have a favorite location along our travel route (US I-10 highway), for collecting sea shells / Foraminifera / diatoms / protists or generally for nature sightseeing?

I will take along a macroscope and a field microscope of up to 400x total magnification and various field tools. I will collect some sand samples and wet samples for sure.

Thank you in advance!

Pensacola (Florida, USA) produced some interesting foraminifera and diatoms. Please see photos in the following forum threads.

Diatoms were seen in submerged sand from Langdon Beach (30.316695,-87.262465):

Forams and other bigger shells were collected at "Snorkeling Reef" (Google Maps coordinates 30.347563,-87.053340) and beach front of Hampton Inn (30.330945,-87.138521). Both samples were submerged or exactly at surf line:

Tide condition and season may change sample locations though. But the southwestern part of Pensacola seems to be more productive than the northeastern part.

Updated title and added an image link to above. ID of the diatoms would be highly appreciated. Thank you!
