Another "rover" (more like an SUV) is on its way. The descent occurs in 27 days. See http://marsprogram.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/
I recommend watching the live coverage of the descent. You get wrapped up in it, and things get pretty tense near the end there. I watched the Phoenix descent and it was very interesting.
The maneuvers these folks are pulling off are quite amazing, and the entire thing has to be fully automated because communications take too long to back-and-forth while the equipment is falling towards the planet.
Imagine being involved in this project. Years of work rest on an autonomous landing where so many things could go wrong. These people must have a emotional attachment to this project - it would be hard to sleep the night before.
