Fir Tussock Moth cocoon

Post by Pizzazz »

Hi Gang!

I discovered TWO of these near the same live Oak tree leaf. Looked interesting and to my best guess, it is a Tussock Moth Cocoon.

Three shots to show ever-increasing detail.

Common name: fir tussock moth
Scientific name: Orgyia detrita Guérin-Méneville, 1831 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Lymantriinae)

Neat! I think they work their hairs into the cocoon because they are irritating.
