Lichens soredia and isidia are propagules (forms of vegetative dispersion) typical of many groups of them.
I found a humid weathered sandstone rock covered by a lichen likely of the genus Cladonia densely covered at its turn of soredia. I brought a small portion to home to study and image it.
Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 50mm f2.5 Compact Macro at F5, 3 Ikea LED lamps, tracing paper diffuser, Oly BHMJ block with Wemacro MicroMate, Zerene stacks
1/2X magnification
1- almost full frame
2- crop to better show details
3- Because I can't use a SEM, I did this 100% crop converted to BN, do you see the tiny ant?
Stereo pair for crossed eyes
Parallel view stereo pair
Now about 2X, same setup but with the Minolta 5400 scanner lens on bellows
More images to follow, I hope

Re: Lichen propagules
Those are really cool! I'd like to learn more. Can you (or anyone here) recommend a good field guide to lichens in the US and Canada? I'd be looking for a book with lots of color photos and also some botanical info like you shared above. It doesn't have to be cheap but let's say something well under $100. Suggestions?

Thanks all for your kind comments!
Sorry, I'm not an expert and, living at the other side of the pond, I don't know your country species literature.JayMcClellan wrote: ↑Sun Jan 08, 2023 3:04 pm...Can you (or anyone here) recommend a good field guide to lichens in the US and Canada? Now at 4.4X on sensor with the Olympus UPlanFl 4/0.13 with the Sigma SLA as tube lens on bellows
And a fluorescence one with the same optics, illuminated with two UV365nm flashlights plus microscope epiilluminator with UV365nm LED. Long pass 425nm emission filter

Wow. Nice series. Makes me want our two feet of snow to melt faster! We have many patches of moss, lichen and such right in the yard.
