Canon MPE 65mm & 1.4 Extender At 7x Test
It is winter up here, so nuthin' fancy. I did a test tonight with the Canon MPE 65mm racked out to 5x with a Canon 1.4 extender (original model) on a Canon 5D MK IV for a combined 7x magnification with an effective f stop of f64 (if my math is correct). 41 images at 50µm.

The image looks sharp despite he effective aperture. He does look a little worse for wear. I’m getting ready to delve into my canned specimens also. Snow here today but its not like Alberta.

Interesting subject! Looks like some of its eyes survived drying with their shape intact, and some did not.

The image shown here is 1024 pixels high. I'm guessing that corresponds to the full sensor height, 24 mm. Working the numbers, each pixel as shown here is about 0.023 mm on sensor, versus an f/64 effective blur cycle about 0.070 mm. Standard lore has it that blur circle noticeably softens the image only when it spans more than 3 pixels, so what's displayed here is around the limit of what can look sharp. I expect that pixel-peeping the image, at over 4X higher resolution, would see quite a lot of blur.

It has been and still is snowing here since Friday night. Specimen was straight out of the alcohol I didn't bother cleaning it.wwheeler48 wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 11:06 pmThe image looks sharp despite he effective aperture. The image looks pretty nice actually. Have you tried the lens with extension tubes? Was the lighting with the Ikea Jansjö's ?

I noticed this as well. Under the microscope the eyes were good. By the time I took its picture (a couple of hours later) I noticed some of the eye(s) had shrunk especially with a prior specimen of a fly. To me it seems one has to be diligent in timing from alcohol to image taking especially with soft bodied insects.rjlittlefield wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 11:31 pmInteresting subject! I have tried extension tubes but only to see what the field of view was. Lighting was three Canon 580 EX II's (left, right, above) diffused with my homemade "light tent" with some kind of packing material from an Amazon purchase.Marcepstein wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 7:42 amThe image looks pretty nice actually. It does look good. If so inclined, you can find live critters under leaf litter and logs.

I'll keep this in mind for next spring, currently -35°c and two feet of snow.MarkSturtevant wrote: ↑Mon Dec 19, 2022 8:36 pmIt does look good. If so inclined, you can find live critters under leaf litter and logs.

I really like how this image turned out.
I'm in Canada! Isn't that weird?
