Canon 1000D, Nikon 10x0.25 finite objective.

This is the hind femur of a female Empis staegeri. A 3,5 mm small fly belonging to the "Dance flies".
These flies have a behaviour similar to ours in some aspects ...

" These ornaments appear to have evolved by Darwinian sexual selection in which females compete for access to choosy males that supply courtship (nuptial) gifts ... "
