Cinnamon Fern New Post

Post by Marcepstein »

Below is a series of the Cinnamon fern, Osmunda cinnamomea, (Judd et al. 2008) that I have reworked. The first shows the fiddlehead unfolding with the fertile leaf in the background. The second shows the fertile leaf enlarged showing the sporangia and many sporangium. The green sporangium apparently are still maturing while the cinnamon colored sporangium have matured and released spores. The third image is an enlarged section showing the sporangium, some have opened (look like "packmen" .. guess this tell my age). The forth image enlarges a bit more to see the green and cinnamon colored sporangium and a closer view to what may be spores (tiny green specs) on the lip of some of the opened sporangium (mid left). This is about as close as I was able to achieve. It was a fun challenge and hopefully I have the terminology correct. Please let me know if additional edits are needed.
