Researching these medals I have come across some fascinating pages of history. I had never heard of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS) before and its history is fascinating.

This particular medal was awarded to Brigadier General John Beatty, who was an orginal member of MOLLUS and the degree for original members is "Original Companion." A brief biography is at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Beatty_(Ohio_banker)
When the civil war broke out he left the bank and formed a company of volunteers who were incorporated into the Third Ohio Infantry Regiment with Beatty in the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He was a prolific writer and wrote books on finance, history and novels. His Civil War diary "The Citizen Soldier" is still in print.
