Cabbage white egg

Post by Guppy »

Hi

The species determination of the cabbage white butterflies via the imago, is very difficult for me.
In our country it is warm again since one week and the cabbage white butterflies are fluttering around very numerous on the fields (thus no Pieris napi).
I searched cabbage leaves for egg clutches, but could not find any.
On the same leaf they landed several times in a row for a short time, so no time to place a whole egg clutch.
Upon closer inspection of the cabbage leaves, I then discovered small individual dots (0.47 mm diameter), thus no P. napi.
Under the binoculars single eggs with a length of 1mm could be seen.
Thus no large cabbage white (P. brassicae), because it lays its eggs in a well recognizable clutch of about 100 eggs,
but it is the small cabbage white (P. rapae) which lays its eggs individually.
I also discovered the well camouflaged dark green caterpillars on the cabbage.
Thus species determination not only by the imago.

Hi,

That's really nice and the info is interesting too. I especially like the subject isolation and the translucence. I'll have to pay more attention to butterflies messing with leaves. I have had a really hard time finding insect eggs lately - perhaps owing to poor vision.
