Evania appendigaster ocelli at 21X

Post by seta666 »

A 270 stack of Evania appendigaster ocelli at 21X with mitutoyo plan apo 20/0.42, raynox DCR-150 and sony A7. Light comes from two JY610II flash lights.

The eyes have lots of retouching from single frames and 3 image stacks to try keeping as much detail as possible. There was still some water present after cleaning it, I did not give it enough time to fully dry.. :D

Here you have some 100% crops showing Pmax vs Dmap vs Edited (Retouched from single frames and 3 image slabs in Zerene stacker)

Wonderful! Please tell us how you edit your photos, step by step. I'm far from your quality, my raw pictures are similar, and I'm willing to sit at the computer for hours to get closer to your perfection. What tools are you using? Do you retouch every element of the eye pixel by pixel? How do you get sharpness and plastic softness at the same time? If possible, tell us your secrets - you will be master of excellence anyway.

This technique was discussed in the past by Rik and myself. My lighting technique and postprocessing are quite average, really; is the retouching within Zerene what is important for this kind of work.

Some (most) times light reflections destroy surface detail, the only way to keep this detail is retouching the stack from single frames and/or small slabs (2-3 images per slab) It takes lots of time and patience but it is worthwhile it in my opinion. Some areas in this image were retouched from 20 frame slabs, top part of the eye from single frames and the bottom part of the eye from 3 image slabs.

This is one of these posts, an Evania I did years ago

And here you can see a GIF showing the effects reflections have on surface detail as focus moves on

Those bright straight lines are taken as detail by Zerene stacker giving a messy final result

Hi Javier

A very good work, with a very original framing

I love this cockroach parasitic wasp, it has a really spectacular morphology when you see its body from very close.

I would love to see how you work that "retouching from single frames", because those eyes have been great.

Love it

Greetings!

Glad you like it!!

Each raw of omatidea need around 3 to 6 frames to be in focus. I just select individual frames or those 3 image slabs and take what I want. I may have used something like 50 individual frames and another 40-50 3 frame slabs ...it is time consuming but not that difficult.

The video can give you an idea of what details I take from each frame ( the video is from the old stack, not the new one)

These wasps have such beautiful eyes. You have done a superb job eliminating the disruptive reflections!
