Ceramic Resonator

Post by Bob-O-Rama »

A ceramic resonator used as a frequency source. The bar of piezoelectric ceramic is driven to oscillate by the chip below. The natural resonant frequency of the bar is tuned to the desired frequency via laser milling, which are the two groves in the top of the bar. The entire device is fairly tiny. ~1cm long.

Details of the laser milling:

Some fun details, mostly because I like textures:

Interesting!

Do you know what the frequency and precision/accuracy/stability of the device is?

What is the application?

An interesting piece, nicely photographed. The concept/illustration of laser milling is intriguing. What is the (presumably) conductive material used to make the various electrical connections? It doesn't look like solder.

Nice series, and I like the technical explanation.

Not entirely. I believe these were from a T1 interface board that had 4 of these. Two were 32768 Hz devices, and the other two were whatever the fundamental clock for a T1 is ( 1.5...MHz? ) from boards in Nortel PBX equipment.

"T1" as in the 1.544 megabits/sec telecommunication channels? I have fond memories of those things, but the memories are from very long ago!
