Buffalo treehopper Stictocephala bisonia

Post by pawelfoto »

Stictocephala bisonia is an invasive leafhopper species that is native to the central and eastern part of North America This species has recently (in the last 100 years) spread across Europe and other parts of the world and has colonized new territories. It is one of three species of the family Membracidae present in Poland at the moment. The buffalo treehopper is a rather unusual insect in appearance. It is generally triangular-shaped with the sides of the front developed into small points, somewhat resembling a miniature (10-12mm (3/8 inch) ) bison. It may live on apple, peach, ash, elm and many other deciduous trees. The buffalo treehopper injures plants not during feeding but when it inserts eggs into twigs. Small rows of scars appear on injured twigs that become scabby and may be sites for plant pathogens to become established. Serious injury is uncommon but has occurred in young orchards grown amongst legume cover crops that favor this insect.

Very nice. I see live ones all the time, but they are very clever about moving to the underside of leaves when they see me approach.
You asked about fixing the colors of insect compound eyes in a different post. I mentioned there how you might do it, but here is the same link. Hope it helps.
