B&W

Post by Adalbert »

Hello everybody,
The other day I was asked for the black and white photos.
So I quickly converted a few. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmVfdfA3
In doing so, I used a black and white - control layer or the channel calculations.
Attached are a few examples:

Excellent conversions! They remind me of artists' ink drawings, or of prints from old entomology manuals.

I agree, the last one looks just like an illustration and the moth head has a great tonal range.

Can you give more explanation about your technique? I think this would be helpful for my scientific work....Thanks in advance.

Hello Lou,

I used two methods:

1.) control layer → black/white
(sometimes reduce saturation and increase the brightness before)

2.) channel calculations
red
green
soft light
new document
mode → grey filter

And finally tone correction.

Thanks Adalbert. What is a control layer? Is that like a Layer mask?

Hi Lou,
It could be something like that:
Layer/Level -> New Setting/Adjustment Layer/Level -> Black&White
