I have a flowering tree outside and when the seed pods mature, they are interesting because the leafy material forms a "box" like structure
around the seeds.
This is looking inside where the seeds are attached and this example is from last year's bloom, so the leaf structure is long deceased and brown.

I am guessing Koelreuteria paniculata aka the golden rain tree. Most of these produce large sprays of yellow or orange/red flowers which turn into these lantern like structures.
