Papilio blumei scales

Post by seta666 »

Hi,
I had this butterfly with me for ages, it is not in very good shape but after seeing the beautiful Papilio sp. images posted here I had to try. They needed lots of retouching so I will not bother doing the stereos.

First with Mitutoyo 20/0.42 and Raynox DCR-150, 21X on NEX-5N. 61 shots, light from two 5000K Bridgelux Leds

Full Size

Next one with Nikon CF BD 40/0.65 and Raynox DCR-150, 42X on NEX-5N. 45 shots, light from two 5000K Bridgelux Leds

Full size

Next with Nikon LU Plan 50/0.80 and Raynox DCR-150, 53X on NEX-5N. 85 shots, light from two 5000K Bridgelux Leds
Wild reflections mixed with large NA makes it a difficult stack; although a bit messy some fine detail can be seen

Full size

I do not own a Mitutoyo 50X, but at 0.55 its NA is not that high compared to 20´s NA0.42 (resolving power 0,50um vs 0,65um aprox)
Mitutoyo 20 +2x TC and Raynox DCR-150, 48X on NEX-5N. 80 shots, light from two 5000K Bridgelux Leds
Loss of resolution vs a clean stack, a valid option I should use more.

Full size

This is a bonus, a single scale. 75X with some cropping; Nikon BD plan 60/0.80 on an Olympus BHT scope via direct projection, 53 shots manual stack, light from one 5000K Bridgelux Led.
Cross polarized, I think the low quality colours may be caused by low quality filters.

Full size

The stereo is subtle, but if zooming in with software like Stereo photo maker some fine details of the structure can be seen.

I also run a 20x test with three different lenses, mitu 20/0. 42, Nikon LU 20/0.45 and Nikon CF 20/0.46

Hello Javier,

Really great photos :smt041

If I am not mistaken, this is the green Swallowtail.
I once shot the mountain Swallowtail and the scales looked almost identical.

Nice! I also use a teleconverter regularly. It is worth reminding the community that a teleconverter works equally well with finite objectives as with infinite objectives.

Are the labels switched between "Center" and "Corner" in the 20x test above? Maybe it's just the lighting.

Hi Lou,

Nop, those are central crops; I chose a problematic area to show Pmax artifacts.

You are right lighting is different, the BD plan was diffused with a ping pong ball, the other two with a paper cylinder. First I did the BD stack and then thought about making a comparison.

Anyway, I made full size Pmax file available for downloading and comparing.

Javier I think you should try to diffuse the light with Thermal Foam Cups made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), I think better lighting is achieved with that type of diffuser. It's just a suggestion
