March Fly 12X

Post by seta666 »

Hi,
A small fly that was in my balcony, around 5mmx1mm. It had beautiful eyes and wanted to do a front shot, but after ultrasound cleaning it came out with a big hole in the middle, could save this side shot. Choose wrong background colour but I am still rusty, need more practice.
12x after some cropping; 123 shots, last one aperture closed 1 1/2 stops, Mitutoyo 10/0.28 , raynox DCR-150 (normal position, but unless I am wrong corner performance should be better) 2x 5000K COB Leds

First I wanted to do it with mitu 20 plus DCR-250 (12.5X) but with so many hairs could have been a retouching nightmare...also needed 300+ shots

Full size

Stereo (I like the eyes and the body thorns)

This shows how small it was

The eyes are even more strange -- divided into a bottom section with small radius and small ommatidia, and a top section with large radius and large ommatidia.

I suspect this means it's a male, equipped with mate-seeking eyes like the turbinate mayflies.

But I do not recognize this fly, even to family.

The eyes were beautiful; with a thin layer dividing left and right , that is were it broke
Mouth parts remind me of those of a Tipula, I do not think they are related though.

It could be a male of Simuliidae (commonly called Black Flies), which in fact are Nematocera, like the Tipulidae ...

It's a male March Fly; Family: Bibionidae

” Not quite so ambitious as that, sir. I should like to put my eyes on the individual entitled to that name.
No man can be truly called an entomologist,
sir; the subject is too vast for any single human intelligence to grasp.”
