Coming across a brass hose nozzle partially imbedded in the soil recently, I tried to run water through it without success. A small dowel cleared the impaction, but to my surprise and dismay, resulted in a mass of highly active critters running around my work space. From a look at their representative, I believe they were springtails, but would welcome the thoughts of others.

Re: Last survivor of the great flood
This does not look to me like a springtail (Collembola). The antennae look like they have too many segments, and the eye has too many facets, in too regular of an arrangement. (From https://projects.ncsu.edu/cals/course/e ... mbola.html , "Antennae 4- to 6-segmented" and "Compound eyes absent or reduced to a cluster of not more than 8 ommatidia".)
To me this looks more like an ant.
Do you have some whole-body shots?

Rik, not a very good one, but here's what I've got. Same specimen.

Definitely not an ant.
This is now reminding me of a very young earwig, something like https://bugguide.net/node/view/622180 .

I try to have my say ... it looks like a young earwig...Dermaptera are hemimetabolous insects and the young seem like little adults...

Re: Last survivor of the great flood
My thanks to all three of you. My pre-posting evaluation was insufficient, and I am now quite convinced that this is an earwig, likely a young one.
I appreciate your help and comments!

Definitely an earwig. Nice shot by the way.
