Flies with Olympus 22.5mm f3.5

Post by iangreenhalgh »

Hi folks

No idea what this lens was intended for, picked it up cheap on ebay.

Some stacked shots I made with my EOS 650D. I used RawTherapee, Zerenestacker and Photoshop. The results are okay, not as sharp as I'd like, some diffuse glow. Maybe It's my fault the results are not so sharp and I used it outside it's intended magnification range?

I seem to remember seeing one of these or like this on the end of an optical cable for industrial inspection.

Hi John

Could well be. My guess was microfiche but it's only a guess.

I am curious if it can perform better, but not having any info on it, I have no idea what magnification it is optimised for.

I have an almost identical Olympus 35mm f/4.5. I was not impressed with it.

That's an unusual level of precision on the focal length: 22.25 mm. Seems like it must have been made for some very specific purpose.

My wild guess would be that it's a microfilm/microfiche lens, optimized for looking through thick glass.

optimized for looking through thick glass.
That would be very interesting and useful!

Well, it's just a wild guess. But I have used microfilm/microfiche readers that had carrier plates maybe 5 mm thick, and the text on screen looked good everywhere.

Working distance on those readers was pretty short, unfortunately.

I hope you are right, that would be really useful for shooting through liquid.
