Black beetle
Wasn't able to find a photo or name of the beetle in California reference's, but sure somebody in this forum can identify it.
Re: Black beetle
I'm as far from as expert as we come.. but looks to me like the "carabus coriaceus"?
An old image of mine of the specimen that I suggested..

Nice images!
Image #2 clearly shows the "Mandibles with transverse rugosities, at least basally. --->Calosoma" mentioned at https://bugguide.net/node/view/25154 .
See also https://bugguide.net/node/view/359459/bgimage .
Note the absence of that texture on the mandibles of https://scontent.farn1-1.fna.fbcdn.net/ ... e=5F83944A .

Seems like the right family, but I'd guess the genus as Calosoma.

Re: Black beetle
I'm certainly no expert, but experts have told me that this one below is a carabus coriaceus.
I believe looking at the legs is the easiest way to differentiate them..?
