Aquamarine

Image

This is a small specimen - 14 mm across at the top - of gemmy aquamarine from Erongo, Namibia. This is probably the single image I'm most proud of to date.

D7000 on custom stepper controlled closed-loop sled, mounted on tripod, angled to view specimen from above which rested on a borosilicate glass plate with black velvet backdrop and diffuse continuous LED lighting from above. Stacked with Zerene Stacker (DMap).

I use an oddball lens, the Nikon 70-180mm macro, which for this was set to maximum magnification at 180mm which is 1:1.3, and functionally becomes 1:1 with the Nikon 6T closeup lens attached. The 70-180mm macro is really convenient for mineral photography as it does not focus breathe or change its effective aperture as it is focused down.

One of my favorite gems!

An interesting photo taken with a somewhat mythical lens.
Thanks for sharing.
