As impressive as the scales are (very nice photo!) the great puzzle to me is the cornea of the eyes. They appear so opaque. Even in freshly collected weevils and many other dark eyed beetles. Fly eyes I can usually see right into. The same with butterfly and moth eyes. And this forum has some remarkable photos of the retina of some spider eyes taken thru the lens. But these weevil eyes defy inspection via the front.
