Sand

Post by soldevilla »

A friend has given me a small bag of river sand of a suspicious reddish color. Once examined in the microscope and separated some grains, we have some pretty almandine garnets.

Wow! What a surprise! Was this regular river sand with a few rare crystals that you separated, or was it mostly crystals? I never knew that river sand could have such nice unweathered crystals.

These must be pretty close to the source rock. Garnet isn't super soft but it rounds out pretty well with a bit of alluvial action.
Absolutely gorgeous photos. I need to try this some time.

Maybe the 70% of the sand are garnets. But I have separated a few good crystals. There were many fragments there.
