Following Steve's superb subject and images of the hard drive internals (see link below) I thought I might give this a try if I could find a scrap hard drive.
We were physically destroying (grinding up platters) many of our older hard drives from our in-house computer network system, so I grabbed a couple and was able to remove the RW head and actuator arm on one drive. I think this came from a 10Krpm hard drive from Maxtor, and was a single platter device.

Thanks Steve for informing & showing us this wonderful macro subject. Now I have to try and find another scrape hard drive to disassemble!

Nice image Mike - I just found this as I haven't been on the forum for a while - been busy making images for an exhibition.
I haven't seen a RW head like this before - it looks to be only one sided.
I'm sure one day soon we will look back on mechanical hard drives with fond memories when they finally get replaced by SSD's. That will be a shame from the photographic point of view!
